Année sportive : El Guerrouj, enfin une légende !

Le doublé aux Jeux d'Athènes du Marocain Hicham El Guerrouj est venu concrétiser en 2004 l'immense carrière du roi du demi-fond et rectifier une anomalie de l'Histoire olympique. L'image restera comme l'une des plus marquantes de ces JO-2004: le 28 août, El Guerrouj franchit la ligne du 5000 m le visage hagard et deux doigts fièrement pointés pour signifier l'exploit.

Deuxième sur cette distance aux Mondiaux 2003, El Guerrouj profitait de la course d'attente des vrais spécialistes de la distance, dont l'Ethiopien Kenenisa Bekele, pour s'offrir un doublé 1500-5000 m qu'il est le deuxième à réaliser, après le Finlandais Paavo Nurmi en 1924.

Quatre jours plus tôt, il avait enfin remporté le titre olympique du 1500 m, mettant fin à l'histoire d'un rendez-vous manqué entre l'olympe et le plus grand miler de tous les temps.

Le détenteur des records du monde du 1500 m et du mile avait en effet chuté en finale des JO 1996 (12e) avant d'être battu - à la surprise générale - en 2000 à Sydney.

Cette fois, celui qui fut nommé par ses pairs athlète de l'année à trois reprises (2001, 2002, 2003) n'a laissé personne se faufiler entre lui et l'or à l'issue d'une somptueuse course où son principal adversaire, le Kényan Bernard Lagat, lui mena la vie dure en échouant d'un souffle.

Paternité et allergies
Paradoxalement, il a réalisé son double exploit l'année qui fut sans doute la plus difficile à gérer de sa carrière, tant la pression olympique fut intense.
A l'entame de la saison 2004, l'enfant d'Ifrane comptait de vrais statistiques de boxeur sur 1500 m et le mile: 83 courses, 80 victoires, dont beaucoup par KO. A l'exception de ses deux échecs olympiques, il avait connu un seul revers: sur un anodin mile en fin de saison 1997. Depuis sa défaite de Sydney, il était invaincu.

Pourtant, début juillet, la machine du 1500 mètre-étalon se grippe. Dans le stade olympique de Rome - pour sa deuxième sortie de l'année -, El Guerrouj est relégué à une incroyable huitième place, résultat qui met fin à une série d'invincibilité de 29 courses.

Quelques jours plus tard à Lausanne, le quadruple champion du monde explique en pleurs que sa préparation hivernale a été perturbée par des infections liées à des allergies respiratoires qui l'inquiètent en vue d'Athènes.

En quelques semaines, il se remet pourtant sur les bons rails, en dépit d'une autre défaite à Zurich, laissant à cette occasion le meilleur chrono de l'année à Lagat.

Apaisement et retraite
A 30 ans, marié en septembre 2003 et père de famille depuis le printemps dernier, Hicham "le gentil" est maintenant apaisé par cette quête olympique et peut regarder vers d'autres horizons. A l'automne, il annonce que les Mondiaux 2005 à Helsinki seront son dernier grand rendez-vous international et qu'il compte faire de l'année 2006 une sorte de tournée d'adieux.

Sur la piste, le néo-trentenaire, qui a inévitablement perdu en vitesse pure, prévoit de délaisser le 1500 m, sa distance de prédilection, pour se consacrer au 5000 m. Il indique enfin qu'il souhaite renouer avec l'un de ses premiers amours, le cross-country, en participant aux Mondiaux en mars prochain en France.

A cette occasion, Hicham El Guerrouj devrait d'ailleurs retrouver l'Ethiopien Kenenisa Bekele, en route lui aussi pour entrer dans la légende de l'athlétisme.
